Breast Cancer: Where There's a Will, There's a Way

Take a moment to consider this: How many people do you know who have been diagnosed with breast cancer? If you can't think of anyone directly in your circle of family, friends and acquaintances, I'm willing to bet that someone in your life knows someone who's been affected. Whether you or someone you love has been diagnosed with or affected in some way by breast cancer, it can be a scary time to work through, but Synergy Pharmacy Benefit Consultants wants you to know you're not alone in this fight...

Most Common Among Women
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. By the end of 2017, an estimated 252,710 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and, unfortunately, an estimated 40,610 women will die from it. However, recent studies show that death rates from breast cancer in the United States have dropped 39% between 1989 and 2015, and that rate continues to drop! What is the cause for this decrease in death rates? New treatments being discovered and more in-depth knowledge of the disease made available to doctors and patients to help improve the quality of life for those diagnosed. So how can you get involved? Read on to find out.

Working Towards a Cure
The overall declines in breast cancer death rates since 1989 have been attributed to both improvements in treatment and early detection by mammograms, both of which are made possible by extensive research to finding treatments and gaining insight to help further the movement toward a cure. The American Cancer Society has invested more than $4.6 billion in cancer research since 1946, all to find answers to save lives. Not only are they committed to finding answers, they also give their time to educate people about the disease and ways to prevent risk, as well as provide treatment and support to those in need. However, none of this would be possible without the continued support of those who get involved, whether that's through volunteering your time or through a donation. Every little bit helps when it comes to saving lives.

Treatment for Breast Cancer
One of the treatments that are successfully being used to treat breast cancer is Herceptin. Herceptin has been proven to be an effective treatment both before and after surgery for people with HER2+ breast cancer. Herceptin is a targeted therapy approved for the treatment of people with certain HER2+ cancers. HER2+ cancer cells have more HER2 receptors (a particular protein found on the surface of cells) than normal cells. HER2+ cancer is considered aggressive because it grows and spreads quickly. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence after initial surgery.

Treatment Comes at a Cost
Unfortunately, these treatments don't come without high cost. Specialty drugs that treat cancer and autoimmune diseases dominate the market and come with a high sticker price. However, many of these drugs, like Herceptin, have been proven to provide immeasurable value to patients. Spending on specialty drugs is growing at a rapid and unsustainable rate. Addressing these cost trends is critical to ensuring a sustainable health care system and achieving affordability for businesses and consumers.

We Can Help Save on Specialty Drug Costs
For brokers and employers reviewing upcoming open enrollment options, it's in your best interest to pay attention to your prescription drug spending. Without thoroughly auditing your claims, you could be missing a key part of where your unexplained expenses are coming from. If your plan isn't structured properly and your employees aren't educated correctly, this could be causing unnecessary spending on specialty drugs, that in turn, are causing specialty drugs to become harder for patients who need them to obtain. In times when those specialty drugs are truly what keeps them healthy and alive, it's really no place to skimp out on when reviewing your 2018 policies. We offer affordable benefit management solutions for self-funded employers that can help save big on specialty drugs. Let us provide a FREE no-obligation claims analysis to see if we can help lower your prescription drug costs!
